How to clean tile floors

If you wish to make your home look more spacious, beautiful and full of soft color, tile floor is exactly what you need. These floors do not only provide a unique appearance. They are also extremely easy to clean which makes them more and more popular.

If you’re a happy owner of this wonderful piece of decor, some advice on how to clean tile floors will definitely come in handy.

Cleaning tile floors regularly

To clean your tile floors on a regular basis, you are going to need nothing more than a:

  • soft cotton cloth
  • some warm water
  • a cleaning chemical substance

Soft cloth makes it very easy to wipe off the dirt and polish the floor to get back its natural shine.

Another way to clean tile floors quickly is to use a pencil eraser. It’s a great trick to clean up small areas of old stains. Simply pick a pencil with a white or pink eraser and rub it over the stain until it’s clean.

Or if you’re looking for an effective natural substance for cleaning tile floors, you can try baking soda. It’s especially powerful for removing old stains which other cleaners failed to clean up. All you have to do is prepare a mixture of warm water and soda, then clean up the stains with a bristle or a toothbrush. For particularly stubborn stains, leave the mixture to sit for 10 minutes before removing them.

How to clean tile floors in the bathroom

If you have installed tiles in your bathroom, you’ll soon discover a soap scum tends to accumulate on the floor surface over time. Soap scum is usually a little harder to clean up, be it in floors or shower tiles, but with the right technique it doesn’t have to be that difficult.

  1. First of all, sprinkle a cleaner over the surface of the floor and let it stay for ten minutes.
  2. If you run out of it or just don’t want to use chemical substances, prepare a mixture of water and white vinegar (in equal parts each) and spray it over the floor.
  3. Next, make sure to use a brush with soft bristles. Soft bristles don’t leave scratches so that makes it a preferable tool to use.
  4. Once the soap scum is removed, rinse the surface with clean water to get rid of any streaks.
  5. To clean the floors off mildew, just prepare a 50/50 mixture of water and ammonia and clean the spot with it.

How to clean tile floors in the kitchen

Tile floors in the kitchen are particularly prone to some stubborn substances like grease and food stains, much like kitchen backsplash. However, cleaning the kitchen floors won’t be any harder than cleaning the bathroom ones:

  1. First of all, you’re going to need a cleaning mixture. Mix a bottle of warm water with ½ teaspoon of a dish detergent.
  2. Sprinkle the mixture all over the surface.
  3. Wipe off the surface with a sponge or a piece of cloth.
  4. Dip and wring the cloth as you need to keep it clean.
  5. Once the kitchen floor is clean, take a clean damp cloth and wipe down the surface to remove any streaks and make the floor shine.

Cleaning tile floors: the grout area

A very annoying, yet necessary, task is to clean the grout between the tiles. These tiny spaces seem particularly difficult to reach. No worries, though, as there’s quite an easy way to get things done without too much hassle.

All you have to do is use a cleaner (you may need a stronger one as the dirt on the grout is particularly stubborn). Remove the dirt with a soft bristled brush to avoid scratches.

Alternatively, you can mix up a cleaning substance on your own. To do this, you will need to mix together ¾ cup of water and ½ cup of bleach.

Once you removed the dirt, rinse the surface with clean water and dry the floor with a soft cloth to make it glisten nicely. Remember to apply a sealer to the grout in order to prevent the dirt from penetrating into these small spaces.

General cleaning tips for tile floors

Tile floor is such an amazing thing to have in your house or apartment. Indeed, they make your home sparkle every day. Here are a few final tips on how to clean tile floors properly so they look fantastic.

Clean the floor tiles as soon they get dirty

A good rule of thumb is to remember that the best way to clean tile floors is to do it immediately after you dirtied them. Wipe off the spills as they occur. Not only it saves a lot of time, it’s also a great way to prevent the spills reaching the grout.

In this case, it will take only a few seconds to clean the mess up. First, clean up grease stains and water streaks with a dishwashing substance or a soap mixture. Use a sponge or a mop.

Use a vacuum cleaner or a broom for larger particles

A vacuum cleaner or a broom will remove large particles such as chips or sand brought from the outside and this will save the tiles from scratches. Once these particles are removed, it’s much easier to remove the stains and clean the grouts. Avoid sharp objects so as not to scratch the floor.

Use the recommended cleaning substance for different tile materials

While cleaning tile floors, remember about the material. For example, matte tiles require special emulsions and wax mastic to preserve the brightness of a color.

Avoid highly acidic substances

Don’t clean the tiles with the substances produced for the sanitary appliances. Due to their content of chalk, you’ll have to remove the strains afterwards. It is recommended to avoid solvents and formulations with high concentration of acid as it can destroy the decorative effect altogether.
